Location: Jl. Petitenget No.51, Kerobokan Kelod, Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali, Indonesia
Year built: 2015
Architect: Andra Matin
Ethos: Modern Balinese architecture from the 50s and 60s; geometric and angular design

Katamama is the very first hotel property by the PTT Family, the company behind Bali’s esteemed Potato Head Beach Club. Located right behind the beach club, the hotel is a geometric, beautiful property by architect Andra Matin and interiors designed collectively by Ronald Akili, PTT Family CEO, the PTT Family Creative Team, and design company Takenouchi Webb from Singapore. The angular design and strong lines are an intriguing contrast amongst the greenery and landscape, a rare and interesting sight in Bali architecture.

It was great to stay here since the location is close to all of the action in the heart of Seminyak. It’s a partygoer’s paradise since Potato Head Beach Club is a hop skip away and lots of shops and hip cafes are in the area. It may be a bit saturated for some, but if it’s your first experience in Bali, it’s definitely worth checking out for the convenience, modernity, and comfort. In addition to all of the restaurants and clubs in the area, staying at Katamama includes a lot of perks that you should take advantage of. Besides priority to all events and restaurant reservations, being a hotel guest gets you priority to Potato Head Beach Club and reservations for their day beds. When we were there, Disclosure was the guest DJ at Potato Head, and we had an amazing time with a packed crowd. Music fans should definitely make it a priority to visit!

The design philosophy behind Katamama is “made by artisans”, which helps bring a craft-focused aspect to the hotel’s hospitality and design. There is thought and purposed behind every material used at the hotel from the naturally-dyed indigo ikat kimonos in every room to the 1.5 million hand-pressed bricks that make up the exteriors – it’s a true showcase of century-old Indonesian crafts in a modern setting. We took advantage of the views on every level: check out the pool from the lobby and make sure you catch the amazing sunsets from the hotel or the balcony terrace of every room.

It’s also important to note food options at Katamama – all menus are created with sustainability in mind. The breakfast menu (favorite meal of the day!) had lots of healthy options that were all beautifully presented. There are pretty photo opportunities at every turn, so the design and feel of the hotel also attracts a more youthful crowd. It’s a fun location with lots of activities available, so you’ll never want to leave. Each room is even outfitted with a comprehensive bar area, and you can request for a bartender to come make a drink from the in room bar. It was a new experience for me to have a fresh mojito made in front of me! Highly recommend for big and small groups of friends looking for a relaxing yet fun experience in a modern setting.
