I visited Lisbon at a very good time. 10 years ago when I went, it was cold and rainy, I could barely remember what I managed to see. Few weeks ago, blue sky and sun is high, I had the pleasure to rediscover the charm of this old city.

During my short visit I stayed at the Memmo Alfama hotel, a member of Design Hotels. It is steps away from the Cathedral and the São Jorge Castle,  as one of the best hotels in Lisbon and is the first boutique hotel in the city’s historic area, I thought it would be difficult to find along the meandering uphill roads, yet almost every cab drivers in Lisbon seems to know exactly where it is.

Hidden in the back of an alley midway on the hill, I was happy with my choice to stay there. As soon as I walked in, I was drawn to the simple, stylish and contemporary design of the hotel: perfectly integrated in the surroundings, the 42 rooms overlooking the river Tagus and Alfama, striking the right balance among the historic buildings nearby.

Living up to its reputation of the special feeling of being at a Portuguese home, we returned to our room with authentic nata tarts and a bottle of Port Wine welcoming us. IMG_0235
As modern and stylish as the hotel gets, they do their best to protect the environment. You can see from the hotel design details that some of the original features are kept, and transformed into lounging space. (Love the amenities in the bathroom, smells so great!)

They make really good use of natural sunlight, incorporating wood and nature elements into the design of the hotel- creating a welcoming and relaxing space for breakfast, meetings or just chilling.

I’ve been told that this little space used to be a baking oven. Imagine that!

One of my favourite spots has to be the balcony where guests are allowed to bring food from the buffet table downstairs and eat up there. We took the best spot- with the terrace pool next to us, and facing the river under the breezy morning sun. It was DIVINE. I also love the little details of how they bottled juices and milk, providing little boxes of teabags for you to take back into your room, and keeping it clean and hygienic at the same time. It was one of my favourite moments as well- the tranquility of enjoying a delicious breakfast with that view is hard to describe.

At nights the same spot turns into a bar, serving wine and cocktails. It is so relaxing to chill under the starry sky and soaking in the view of Alfama, historic part of Lisbon.

Thank you for the wonderful experience, it was perfect. Now I truly understand why the hotel is constantly fully booked!
