Speakeasy bars has become a sought-after place lately. Exclusive, hidden, somewhere with essence and a story are even better. and here I am, at the Discount Suit Company.
It took me a while and a few detours before I can manage to find the place. Discount Suit Company, opened on Petticoat Lane (between Brick Lane and Spitalfields Market) earlier this year, is housed within a former tailor’s workshop, the hidden cocktail bar is the latest addition to London’s vibrant underground drinking scene.IMG_5929Created by three drinks industry insiders – Andy Kerr, Stephen Thompson and Ally Tatton, (known as The Umbrella Project), this place is like a hip and cool place to be in East London. Usually not a huge fan of clubbing around east london, the moment I walked down (it’s literally an underground cocktail bar), I fell in love with this place (it’s hard not to). The brick walls, the wooden table, the leather chairs, the rusty metal sewing machine….so raw, so trendy…so fashionable and so cool!

I was again very lucky to be greeted by the friendly and charming owner Andy, he told me how they bought the furniture (formally a huge closet) and deconstruct them and reconstruct them into the bar area, how they made the lights bulbs on the walls one by one, sourcing from all over the place and making them themselves….

I was desperately trying to have a test call with this retro dial phone, Matt helped me but the plug was a bit too far so I couldn’t give it a try..next to the phone was a small music station where they play 60s, 70s music, motown songs..every weekend there will be live DJ playing, and even the intimate place can hold up to 60 people, Andy wanted to keep it reasonably packed rather than over-jammed, so anyone who managed to get into the party can really enjoy and dance a little.
I called this the “Ophelia Drink” because it’s tailor made for me based on my request. I forgot what was in the mix, but the very knowledgeable bartender Matt was patiently explaining to me bottle by bottle what he was mixing into the drink, and modifying until I was satisfied. It was so much fun.
Even the note pads they used to take orders are from old fashion sketch books, fashionably pinned onto the wooden panel with pins and needles.

The drinks list, printed on papers with fashion sketch, is separated into two parts, the first being a concise selection of just six signature cocktails, all reworked old-time favourites; the second being a catalogue of ‘Forgotten Classics’ from over the years. Andy was very kind and patiently talked me through the cocktail list, where lots of the drinks are rarely seen elsewhere. If I didnt have to work the next morning, I would really give it a go a try as much on the list as possible! BUT, that’s also a reason for re-visits later on….

I absolutely adore this place.. it’s a mixture of everything- hidden, intimate, exclusive, trendy, old-fashioned, trendy, cool, hip, fashionable, raw….the night I visited was a weekday, it was still fully seated by not crowded, good enough for me to have an idea of how flexible the place can accommodate to a quiet chill out night, and a busy party night. It was pure joy and fun just hanging around the wooden bar table watching different cocktails being created. I had such a great night, with the company of Andy and Matt, not only I had learnt something about mixology, alcohol and spirits, i also had a fun night joking about beer vs cocktails.

next time when you find yourself around Liverpool Street or Spitalfields Market and don’t quite know where to go, be sure to check this place out.
